Bamford Edge
With views stretching far in to the distance over the Peak District to Ladybower Reservoir and open moorlands, Bamford Edge was a perfect way to dust off the cobwebs, catch up with friends and enjoy the views to be had.
Parking just south of Ladybower Reservoir I promised Jodie ’no hills today’ only to be greeted by a leisurely up hill stroll along New Road to catch up with our friends.
A brief hail storm came and went and we caught sight of Andy and Eleanor. After a quick catch up we were off and ready to make the small ascent up on to Bamford Edge. Once up on the top we got to fully appreciate the views over Bamford village, something which is quite an achievement considering our last few hikes have been surrounded in fog! The day had perfect hiking conditions; blue skies, an ideal temperature and no wind.
Once on the ridge we had perfect views of the lost villages of Ashopton and Derwent that are now firmly under water with nothing more than the viaduct left just peeking above the waterline, as well as views of Win Hill and the Hope Valley Quarry
Our route found us encountering open moorland, windswept trees and heather lined trails before Andy and Eleanor stopped to enjoy their tomato soup and mini cheddars, whereas we had our sights firmly set on the pub at the end!
Packed up and ready to move, Stanage Edge emerged in the distance with tiny climbing figures just about visible. For us though this wasn’t the destination, just a view to enjoy whilst we tackled the bog and thick heather overgrowth - lockdown had certainly made the trails harder to navigate without the weekly walkers! Nevertheless with Andy and Eleanor alternatively leading the way and the resident grouse shouting at us to move on we completed our loop round with no mishaps.
Unfortunately for us our pub of choice, The Yorkshire Bridge Inn, was absolutely jam packed and we were unable to secure a table given that the restrictions only permitted outside dining. Not a problem though, it just means we will have to return to sample the pub delights once restrictions have been lifted further.
A fantastic day was had by all and a well earned cider was cracked open once we were back home.
